This position is located within the Directorate for Public Health under the Head of Occupational Audiology or Occupational Medicine. Serves as staff audiologist and practices in the medical treatment facility or clinic and independently manages and oversees, or assists with management and oversight of the local Hearing Conservation Program (HCP). Also, provides consultative services regarding occupational hearing and loss prevention strategies.
THIS IS AN EXPEDITED HIRING AUTHORITY ANNOUNCEMENT. Section 1599c, title 10, United States Code provides that the Secretary of Defense can designate positions as shortage positions and recruit and appoint highly qualified persons to these positions. You will conduct oversight and provide services and support for local fleet and shore command Hearing Conservation Programs (HCP).
You will network, develop and maintain close contact with Safety Managers, Supervisors, HCP managers and medical representative from local commands with HCP enrollees.
You will perform clinical diagnostic audiology evaluation, fitness for duty evaluations, hearing protection fitting and provide hearing loss preventive education.
You will conduct periodic Hearing Conservation Courses.
You will utilize software systems to enter, retrieve, and analyze hearing conservation data.
You will conduct technical surveys, program reviews, evaluations, and consultations.

Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.

DEGREE: a graduate or higher level graduate degree that included 18 semester hours in the field of audiology with approved clinical practice that was approved, recognized, or accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) at the time my degree was obtained.
LICENSE: a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice Speech/Language Pathology and Audiology in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
In addition, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: planning, conducting, and coordinating clinical and administrative aspects of the full range of services associated with the evaluation and treatment of hearing impairment and/or balance disorders, education and training of hearing loss prevention, and identifies if further consultation is required.
This position has two selective placement factors. Failure to possess these factors will result in an ineligible rating. Possession of the factor must be verifiable via your resume or support documents. The selective placement factors are: 1) Possession of Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification, and 2) possession of Board Certification through either a Certificate of Clinical Competence (Audiology) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA-CCCA), or certification through the American Board of Audiology.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
First priority consideration will be given to preference eligible veterans.
Second priority consideration will be given to military spouse and family member preference eligibles residing in the commute area of the duty location for this position. Commute area is defined as the geographic area surrounding the duty location in which people can reasonably be expected to travel back and forth daily.
Military Spouses and family members may apply 30 days before their anticipated arrival date. However, they will not receive preference until arrival at the foreign location. Additional documentation may be required prior to granting preference.
Military spouses and family members who are appointed may not extend longer than 2 months following the transfer of the sponsor from the commuting area of the foreign duty station; 2 months beyond the separation of the appointee's sponsor; or any time beyond the time employee ceases to be a family member.

Tour of duty will be 36 months.
